She awakes again to the thrumming of rain on the patio tiles, her stomach clenching as she ties her robe.
She goes to the window and hears the beating of the surf more than a mile away, so it isn’t exactly a surprise when she arrives at the cafe to find that yet again the sea has washed over the jetty and everything on it.
Donol is already here, mop and bucket working against the standing water.
“It’s only just gone down enough for to start,” he says.
He doesn’t say what they both are thinking: it’s only getting worse.

Perhaps more of us need to be saying “it’s getting worse”. But I think that’s your wonderfully subtle point

And yet, the hope holds on, over riding the obvious. I liked it so much.
This makes me think of those who choose to remain in areas prone to floods, fires, tornadoes, etc…..
They just matter of fact pick up the pieces and keep on keeping on – despite the weather worsening.

Here on the south coast we hear almost every week of another cliff face collapsing after heavy rains and stormy seas. It’s not getting any better at all.

One has to wonder why people stay in an area prone to floods and hurricanes. For my brother in Wilmington NC, the benefits of beach and good days outweigh the threats. Well written story.
